Este museo no tiene como objetivo general fines de lucro, sino acercar las ciencias, artes y tecnologías a niños, jóvenes y adultos.

El proyecto educativo del MIM se basa en tres grandes líneas de trabajo. La primera, el propio Museo con sus 300 exhibiciones repartidas en 14 salas y su amplia oferta de talleres.
La segunda línea es el Programa de Itinerarios “El MIM en tu Región” que año a año recorre el país para que todos los chilenos tengamos acceso a la educación interactiva
Y tercera, el Programa de Capacitación Docente, cuyo objetivo es entregar herramientas a los profesores para que apliquen en la sala de clases metodologías interactivas en la enseñanza de la ciencia y la tecnología.
Debido a estas características el MIM se ha convertido en un espacio para las familias, jóvenes y comunidades quienes buscan aprender en un ambiente lúdico y educativo.
También cuenta con Aquarium el cual se encuentra en el parque del museo y se paga un valor aparte, Sin embargo, existe una conveniente tarifa combinada para conocer ambos espacios.
